Mirabal's Identity at the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos

Mirabal's Identity at the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos

The University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos (UCM) officially exhibits the third mural with a banner made in a house of high studies, belonging to the visual artist Michel Mirabal. The new Cuban insignia, named Identity, adorns today the reception of the university theater in that center.

The work - similar to the style of its predecessor, which was done at the  Carlos Rafael Rodríguez University (UCf) in October - shows the most essential motifs of the Cuban flag, but above all, it shows it in eternal flow through patches in the form of petals that refer to constant movement.

The initiative of Mirabal -a creator who has been a resounding success not only in Cuba, but with personal and collective exhibitions in many nations-, continues to celebrate his 25 years of artistic life, proud of the public reception that this series called "Art in Flags" has had.

According to the press, he is working on the location of another mural in the city's multi-purpose square, scheduled to be inaugurated next January 6, along with a multiple exhibition with new artists from the Cienfuegos patio.

Cienfuegos artist Enrique Richard announces his next exhibition Gallos de la Galaxia

Since the first creative exhibition in 2003, with 15 personal exhibitions in Cienfuegos city , the visual artist  Enrique Richard Lopez maintains presence of the figure of the rooster in his collections integrated by eleven pieces, for diverse titles like Roosters of the forest, Marine roosters, and Roosters of the city.

With various stages in art, during the 90's he dedicated time to  landscapes and the human figures in techniques such as oil and acrylic on canvas.

Richard Lopez anticipates today that he´s investigating for a next exhibition Gallos de la galaxia, and foresees to incursion in the legends of Cienfuegos.

The southern creator discovered in the roosters a mystery, the popular artists shape it more in their works, because they represent a symbol of cubanness, love, virility, family and  will.

"It's like a symbol in my work. I paint roosters for the poet Luis Gómez, I liked his "decimas" very much and when he died I dedicated the exhibition to him, "Living Forever," recalled the local artist.

Between the reasons that motivate the presence of the rooster in the creative imaginary of their work, he refers us: "It is a natural clock, it gives him/her a welcome to the light, when it dawns it sings, it is caretaker of its territory. All these meanings are in line with a concept of life. The rooster has a beautiful coloring, it is a shining animal".

CIENFUEGOS: HISTORY REFLECTED IN A PARK

Cienfuegos: la historia reflejada en un parque

An old project and at the same time a desire of the Cienfuegos population was materialized thanks to the final impulse that showed the definitive will and much work of the builders and artists: the José González Guerra Park.

Located right at the entrance or exit of the Pearl of the South, according to the road you walk on, it has a novel architectural structure and a monument to the Brigadier of the Wars of Independence for the freedom of Cuba.

The idea of building the José González Guerra Park arose from the reference to the brave Cienfuegos mambí, who stood out for his courage, discipline, command capacity and high fidelity to the country, made by the Commander in Chief in the ceremony held in Cienfuegos for the 31st anniversary (1984) of the assaults to the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks. In 1989, a contest was called with the intention of perpetuating the memory of the famous mambí general, who came from the humblest classes of Cuban society.

When the 46th anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada Barracks and the Bayamo Barracks was celebrated in Cienfuegos on July 26, 1999, Fidel referred to José González Guerra again when he said: "One of the personalities I most admired was that General González Guerra, incredible the number of combats he fought, he must have received great support from the people of Cienfuegos, only with a strong example from the people could he have done what he did".

José Martí in his Complete Works wrote about Brigadier González Guerra: "He was more than 50 years old. He was an admirable Cienfuegos man, of courage, of constancy.

After his death in combat, on February 28, 1875, General Máximo Gómez wrote in his diary on March 2, 1875 General González Guerra has been wounded, which shows that Gómez estimated him to write down that important detail. The newspaper La Independencia of New York published "The Republic has just lost one of its most intrepid soldiers. The brave Brigadier who distinguished himself in more than one hundred combats and well deserved to be called "The Hero of Manaquita".

"With this work not only the patriot is immortalized, but we rescue that historical memory that returns us again and again to the reasons for which generations of Cubans have fought until our days and for which we affirm that our Revolution is only one, from 1968 to the present," Misleidys Valladares, member of the Provincial Bureau of the PCC, affirmed during the inauguration.

The architects Aníbal Barrera and María de los Ángeles Cano, the sculptor Juan García Cruz and the civil engineer María de los Ángeles Mazarredo were the creators of the new space that today can be enjoyed by the people of Cienfuegos and also by those who visit the beautiful city of Cienfuegos.
