Promoting authors and attracting audiences to reading

The Mecenas Publishing House, the flagship publishing house of the province of Cienfuegos, is part of the Territorial Publishing System of the National Book Institute.

It is the main institutional space for the creation and dissemination of authors in the Provincial Center of Books and Literature of the Pearl of the South.

Its mission is to facilitate the exchange and promotion of literature and books for authors, publishers, readers, specialists in different intellectual fields and the public. This purpose is common to all areas.

Founded three decades ago, during which it defended the crucial mission of books and reading, the Cienfuegos house allowed the emergence of an impressive group of literary materials by local and national authors in the most diverse genres.

Many novel creators thank the institution for the release of their first texts. Mecenas has played, and continues to play, a central role in the possibility of disseminating narrative, poetic, essayistic creation and intellectual thought in a broad sense.

The Editorial is related to creative processes in which diversity and originality constitute a strength and efficiency will depend on knowing how to take advantage in each case of the particular edges, without this meaning to give space to improvisation and unilateralism.

In the current 2021, Mecenas expanded its publishing projects, opening the door to digital publishing with the text by Cienfuegos writer Alexis García Somodevilla, El deshollinador (The Chimney Sweeper).

Other titles will follow progressively.

Voices of Heritage Children's Workshop Organized in Cienfuegos

Background of the former Fernandina de Jagua colony, development and evolution of the Pearl of the South, monuments and local symbols, are among the contents of the Voices of Heritage children's workshop, which is organized by the Office of the Cienfuegos City Conservator (OCCC), for next year.

"The objective is to prepare a group of children of eight to eleven years old, so that they can then assume as guides of the thematic tours of our Sendas Project," stated Walquiria Jimenez Ciscal, deputy director of Cultural Promotion and Public Relations of the OCCC.

Conceived from a pedagogical profile around tangible and intangible heritage, the workshop takes up the spirit of a previous initiative, carried out a little over five years ago under the name Soy tu voz en la senda (I am your voice on the trail).

"This time the intention is to open the range of knowledge according to the abilities and interests of the children, in addition to fostering in them communicative and linguistic skills that will allow them to share in a diaphanous way with the external audiences of the Office, said María Dolores Benet León, senior public relations specialist, Palacio Leblanc Cultural Center.

Registration for Voices of Heritage is still open and, after being finalized, the organizers foresee the beginning of the workshop in January 2022, on a date and time to be agreed upon with the children's parents. The course is planned for three months, after which the children will be evaluated through thematic tours.

"El Waya": A warrior and eight decades of walking

When did Wayacón become a legend? In the 1970s he is a fabulator who takes advantage of everything he has at hand (wood, ritual objects, vegetable fibers, etc.) and is capable of making complex things of existence seem natural, sharpened by that biting wit that insufflates him with the desire to live in free will.

"El Waya" has been, above all, an emancipated man who does not surrender to the naive or avant-garde, because art for him was his will to institute his own order, full of "mamitas", costumes and amorphous characters willing to tell their misunderstandings, the history of his eventual family and the even darker existence of so much speculation, of arrogant entelechies, ready to foist the truths to the most "pinto".

Somehow, the visual stories are a sort of reflection of his adventures, thoughts, reservoir of a street philosophy that brandishes to exist the vagaries of chaos, while the vivacity of his emotions run after the uncontrollable, splendid, torrid and collated chromas in the juxtaposed planes and simulated perspectives.

Although he has been insistently classified as a naïf artist, "the Waya" does not resist any label. When he wanted to, he was the most naïve of the avant-garde or the most avant-garde of the naïve. In fact, in the 1980s his installations could not have been more experimental and surpassed in boldness a few graduates of the Instituto Superior de Arte and the Escuela Nacional de Arte. He inherited the vigors of several epochs, and his many energies still connote a work that refuses to age.

The artist reached the age of 80 (how nice the tribute of those who love him made at the headquarters of the Uneac), but his art is scarcely the early youth.

Very few preserve that gift for so many decades. It seems an exaggeration, but it is a certainty. And the fact is that we are not only before an insightful and imaginative creator, but also a popular character that identifies our region, a warrior who has gone through eight decades of successful walks. Happy anniversary, "Waya"!
