To learn the techniques of orientation and space mobility contributes to better help blind persons or those with low level of vision. after the graduation of a new course in the Braille System and Orientation Techniques and Space Mobility, Cienfuegos has increased the number of blind persons having access to this knowledge. The purpose? To contribute to the comprehensive rehabilitation and social inclusion of persons with visual disabilities.
Alexis Sarría Gascón, who is in charge of the Special Hall at the Provincial Library and also the teacher of such subject the main purpose of the course is to better help other people to communicate an guide blind persons. "The social inclusion is not only for blind persons but to all", he said.
Geima García Marturello, a student from Psychology-Pedagogy is one of the students who volunteered to study this subject. According to her, she is very satisfied to see how there are more and more persons interested in learning the Braille System. "The most important thing is that they put this into practice so they can motivate others to integrate to this cause", he said.
Students from elementary schools and junior high schools have been motivated to learn about the writing system used by blind persons. According to Amaya del Carmen García Santana, who is in 5th grade and María Antonieta Rubio Gradaille, from 8th. Both started the course in its summer edition and considered it very helpful for communicating with blind persons.
For Daynuri Vázquez Coll, who recently graduated the Special Education, the main motivation of entering into the course is the possibility to train in the orientation and mobility needed to better help blind persons to develop and independent life. "We don´t know when we could need to help a blind person and that encouraged me to participate in this course. More blind persons should insert into this course, not only those having a family member who is blind or having a friend with this disability", he said.
According to Lázaro Hernández Rodríguez, an English teacher, the Braille System is another way of communication which is internationally used. This is way it is so important that more men and women know this language.
According to Sarría Gascón, in the libraries of the province there are 334 titles and 916 volumes written in Braille. The technicians of the municipalities were the main target of the course´s last edition.
