Statement by the Presidency of UNEAC´s Association of Plastic Artists
The well-known artist Tania Bruguera has called for a supposed performance on December 30 at the emblematic Plaza de la Revolución in Havana. This happened to the margin of any Cuban institution and, as it happens in these cases, the initiative has been widely spread by the counterrevolution media, specially by Diario de Cuba, which was one of the first to attack the statements by presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama on December 17th. We have been fighting these battle for many years against the enemies of the Revolution. We are not naive, the meaning of this performance can not be interpreted in any way as an artistic work. This is a political provocation, oriented in the same direction of those whi have spread it.
The purpose of this action is to go against the negotiations that give hopes to many human beings, in the first place to eleven million of Cubans. It will be supported, in case, by the few local politics mercenaries of a policy that even President Obama has considered to be a failure. This kind of action is supported only by those who think they could have any benefit from blocking any negotiation in course.
Cuban writers and artists deserve to know this new ploy and they will not be let confuse by an operation that tries to present this performance as a project of pure artistic creation. Its clear political intention is reinforced in the message of an artist who does not look for another thing than a circumstantial protagonism. Our people is celebrating the return of our Five Heroes to the country, as well as the announcement of the reestablishment of the diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States. We rejected any opportunistic action that tries to outshine this historical moment.
