Obiní Batá´s rumba at Cienfuegos´ main theater

The audience from Cienfuegos will be able to enjoy the presentation of a group of women at the Tomás Terry theater on November 26th. They use batá drums, claves and cherequé to perform rumba and other similar genres from the Cuban music.  This is the Obiní Batá group, composed by six members conducted by Eva Caridad Despaigne Trujillo. They were founded in 1993 and have offered their art to several Cuban and foreign cities.

Their repertoire is composed by classics from Cuban and foreign authors. This is a very unique group that is composed only by women who play batá drums. The proposals by Obiní Batá are also enriched with plays by Isolina Carrillo, Sindo Garay, Ernesto Lecuona and Benny Moré. "Our pieces include popular themes, rumba and other rhythms taken from the Cuban traditions. We think that without this we couldn't´t be what we are now, very distinguished Cuban across the world", Despaigne Trujillo said in several interviews.

The critics recognize their ability in the art of percussion, as well as their excellent interaction with the audience, which shows how versatile they can be on stage. (Taken from RCM)
