"El Waya": A warrior and eight decades of walking

When did Wayacón become a legend? In the 1970s he is a fabulator who takes advantage of everything he has at hand (wood, ritual objects, vegetable fibers, etc.) and is capable of making complex things of existence seem natural, sharpened by that biting wit that insufflates him with the desire to live in free will.

"El Waya" has been, above all, an emancipated man who does not surrender to the naive or avant-garde, because art for him was his will to institute his own order, full of "mamitas", costumes and amorphous characters willing to tell their misunderstandings, the history of his eventual family and the even darker existence of so much speculation, of arrogant entelechies, ready to foist the truths to the most "pinto".

Somehow, the visual stories are a sort of reflection of his adventures, thoughts, reservoir of a street philosophy that brandishes to exist the vagaries of chaos, while the vivacity of his emotions run after the uncontrollable, splendid, torrid and collated chromas in the juxtaposed planes and simulated perspectives.

Although he has been insistently classified as a naïf artist, "the Waya" does not resist any label. When he wanted to, he was the most naïve of the avant-garde or the most avant-garde of the naïve. In fact, in the 1980s his installations could not have been more experimental and surpassed in boldness a few graduates of the Instituto Superior de Arte and the Escuela Nacional de Arte. He inherited the vigors of several epochs, and his many energies still connote a work that refuses to age.

The artist reached the age of 80 (how nice the tribute of those who love him made at the headquarters of the Uneac), but his art is scarcely the early youth.

Very few preserve that gift for so many decades. It seems an exaggeration, but it is a certainty. And the fact is that we are not only before an insightful and imaginative creator, but also a popular character that identifies our region, a warrior who has gone through eight decades of successful walks. Happy anniversary, "Waya"!
