Provincial Museum of Cienfuegos prepares new design for exhibition halls

A new museological script will distinguish the permanent and transitory rooms of the recently reopened Provincial Historical Museum of Cienfuegos, after a period of restoration that returned to the building its architectural and patrimonial values.

"The new museography consists of a historical foundation, since this is the branch in which we specialize. The Primitive Community room, for example, will not only deal with archeology, but also with the entire aboriginal culture that preceded us. There will be pieces of different types (stone, wood, shells), which will be exhibited in a different way and with a different hierarchy," said Alina Russo Reyes, Director of the museum.

The exhibition spaces dedicated to the Colony and the Arts will show architectural and urban elements that denote the development of the city of Cienfuegos, as well as pieces related to the decorative arts and furniture from previous periods.

According to Russo Reyes, "some of them will be exhibited here and others outside the institution, since the museography we designed contemplates visits to the Historic Urban Center, in order to explain also, from history, the sugar-port-railroad relationship, key in the splendor of the old Fernandina de Jagua colony".

The Director of the Provincial Museum added that among the most striking novelties is the inclusion of didactic games in the rooms, so that the young public has the possibility of interacting with several of the pieces or even accessing the collections virtually. To this purpose, they are seeking the implementation of a project financed by the French Agency for Development.

Russo Reyes emphasized that the new museological script -which is ready to be officially presented next June- will cover each of the institution's sites, including the information center, the offices and the inner courtyard. "All will be musealized with an attractive and more contemporary aesthetic," she said.

Today, the Provincial Historical Museum of Cienfuegos has seven permanent exhibition halls, two transitory ones and one dedicated to concert music. Another of its objectives is to have gastronomic offers with products derived from sugar cane, such as sugar cane juice , representing  the immaterial heritage of the nation.
