The organizing committee of the Cubadisco 2021 Award announced that it will award an honorary prize to the popular singer Raphael, for being "a great icon of Spanish and Latin American song" in his 60 years of artistic life.
During the press conference at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the president of the event, Jorge Gómez, highlighted the tribute to the artists from Spain, guest of honor at the biggest celebration of the recording industry on the island.
In his words, the counselor of the Embassy of Spain, Jorge Peralta, stressed the cultural connection between both nations and thanked the dedication of the event that, for the second time, pays tribute to the European musicians .
Peralta acknowledged the wide spectrum of Spanish sonorities in the event's program, which, from May 15 to 23, includes galas, concerts and audiovisual projections.
The documentary "Paco de Lucía. La búsqueda", directed by Francisco Sánchez, which presents statements by relevant Spanish artists such as Ana Belén, Joaquín Sabina and Joan Manuel Serrat on the singer-songwriter's contribution to flamenco music.
The meeting was the occasion for the presentation of the Cubadisco 2021 Extraordinary Award to the Orquesta Van Van on its 50th anniversary, presented by the Vice Minister of Culture, Fernando Jacomino, to the musician and director, Samuel Formell.
In the last two years, record production in Cuba broke records with more than 300 works, including sound and audiovisual material, distributed in 38 categories and 51 awards, taking into account that, in 2020, the musical event did not take place because of COVID-19.
