Traditions and Legends
To better understand the soul of the peoples it is very important to do some research regarding the facts, events, monuments, institutions, as well as the study of the local myths, legends, traditions, tales, popular chants, etc. They all contain the genesis of a people, its primitive poetry, the source of its sensibility, the origin of its believes and the source of its future hopes.
This section contains legends and traditions from Cienfuegos which were gathered and published in 1919 by Pedro Modesto and Adrián del Valle. They belong to three different periods. The pre-Spanish are mostly based in the local primitive mythology, very original and decorated with some poetry. Some required a special effort by these primitive men in their seek for giving an explanation to the mysteries of life, something that has not been yet solved.
Likewise you will find the traditions related to the time when Cuba was discovered by the Spanish and finally there is a period which closer to the city´s foundation and which also narrates the first years of the village of Fernandina de Jagua, which transformed into the prosperous and modern Cienfuegos.
