It is located at José Martí Square, the city´s major square. It is similar to Paris´ Triumph Arch. In Cuba this kind of monumentde can be only seen in Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos was one of the first lands to be visited by the Spanish priest Bartolomé de las Casas back to the 16th century, especially the place where the city was later founded: the Jagua region, which is currently the province of Cienfuegos.

The Chilean poetess and writer Gabriela Mistral visited the city of Cienfuegos back to 1931, invited by El Ateneo de la Ciudad in order to deliver a lectura on the literary work of our national heroe José Martí.
